Palaeo-CO2 and climate
Article Abstract:
Discrepancies in estimates of ancient atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels are not as problematic as J.F. Kasting indicated. Kasting pointed out that continental glaciation during the Ordovician period conflicted with the high CO2 levels estimated for that time. However, this result does not invalidate the prevailing agreement between CO2 estimates and glaciation. CO2 levels and the greenhouse effect have therefore been a powerful influence on climate. Isotopic methods will probably be useful for estimating CO2 levels but not to the degree Kasting suggested.

Orbital forcing of deep-sea benthic species diversity
Article Abstract:
Pliocene deep-sea North Atlantic benthic ostracod species diversity has been found to be associated to solar insolation changes caused by 41,000-yr cycles of Earth's obliquity. There is also a correlation between temporal changes in diversity and independent climate indicators of benthic foraminiferal oxygen-isotope ratios and ostracod Mg:Ca ratios. There was no support for the stability-time hypothesis in relation to control of deep-sea benthic diversity by cyclic climate change at timescales of 10(super 3)-10(super 4)yr.
