Patching up Hedgehog
Article Abstract:
The multiple-pass transmembrane protein Patched (Ptc) is likely to act as a receptor of the Hedgehog (Hh) family of development signalling molecules. In Drosophila the hh gene is required for the expression of genes such as wingless and decapentaplegic. The main function of hh is to repress the ptc gene which can also be suppressed by smoothened. The Hh protein allows autocatalytic processing to produce a cholesterol-modified product.

Wnt proteins are lipid-modified and can act as stem cell growth factors
Article Abstract:
The Wnt signalling proteins show palmitoylation on a conserved cysteine and removal of the palmitate or mutations in the modified cysteine causes signalling activity, suggesting lipid is required for the signalling activity by Wnt proteins. Also, research shows that Wnt3a proteins induce self-renewal in haematopoietic stem cells.
