Peer review cuts power of Italy's 'barons.'
Article Abstract:
Enhanced collaboration between Italian universities has been one outcome of a new approach to allocating national research funds. Under the new system, it is only possible to apply to extend, through cooperation with other researchers, projects already receiving funding from other sources. The system, which uses independent peer review, is totally electronic. Some observers have expressed concern about the fact that researchers are now competing for a single source of funding, whereas previously funds were clearly split between disciplines.

Popularity puts growing strain on Brussels
Article Abstract:
European Commission (EC) research management chief Graham Stroud has asked the academic community to support the EC's plan to reduce the number of research lines in its next five-year framework research program. Stroud stated that the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers could demand an increase in the number of research lines, thus spreading out research funds too thinly.
