Phonons rewrite structural recipes
Article Abstract:
Ozolins and Zunger have demonstrated that first principles calculations may give the wrong structures if they are based on the 'usual suspects'. They have computed phonon spectra from first principles for several semiconductors and suggest that NaC1 and Beta-tin structures have intrinsic dynamical instabilities. Beta-tin instabilities are due to soft phonons, but the structure may become stable at higher pressures.

A nanometre-scale mechanical electrometer
Article Abstract:
A working nanometre-scale mechanical electrometer was fabricated and characterized. A charge sensitivity of 0.1 e Hz was achieved. Thermal noise analysis suggest that the electrometer could reach sensitivities of 10(super-6) e Hz. It has the advantage of high temperature operation and response over a wide bandwidth.
