Plankton in a warmer world
Article Abstract:
The analyses based on satellite data show that fluctuations, especially in temperature are connected to the productivity of phytoplankton in the world's ocean and that warmer surface temperatures correspond to lower oceanic biomass and productivity. The climate-plankton link is found primarily in the tropics and mild-latitudes where there is limited vertical mixing because the water column is stabilized by thermal stratification and observations suggest that global surface warming is expected to accelerate further as humans continue to release excess carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Predicted reduction in basal melt rates of an Antarctic ice shelf in a warmer climate
Article Abstract:
High Salinity Shelf Water (HSSW), dense, relatively warm sea water produced by sea-ice formation north of the Antarctic Peninsula ice shelf flows, has been shown to flow into the sub-ice-shelf cavity of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf. It causes net melting at the base of the ice shelf. Research has found that there is a strongly seasonal nature to the inflow of HSSW. It seems that warmer winters would lead to less HSSW flowing beneath the ice shelf. This would in turn cause a basal thickening of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf.

Plankton effect on cod recruitment in the North Sea
Article Abstract:
A great concern has been expressed about the decline in cod biomass and recruitment since the Atlantic cod has been overexploited in the North Sea. A mechanism involving the match or mismatch hypothesis is suggested to protect the young cods.
