Pliocene eclogite exhumation at plate tectonic rates in eastern Papua New Guinea
Article Abstract:
In situ zircon U/Pb ion microprobe data is presented that dates the timing of eclogite facies metamorphism in eastern Papua New Guinea at 4.3 + or - 0.4 Myr ago, making this the youngest documented eclogite exposed at the Earth's surface. Results reveal that eclogites can be exhumed at rates that are similar to those at which oceanic crust is created and consumed at plate boundaries (>1cm yr-1).

Journey beneath southern Africa
Article Abstract:
The Kaapvaal programme, designed to investigate the architecture and age of southern Africa's lithosphere, has produced very detailed information about cratons. It was possible to identify high-velocity mantle structures, with apparently irregular lower surfaces, beneath the Kaapvaal and Zimbabwe cratons and the Limpopo belt.

Hard-cored continents
Article Abstract:
Research into why cratons have been unaffected by tectonic forces is discussed. Cratons are the small, ancient centres of continents. Research suggests that tectonic stability depends on basaltic depletion and the thickness of the lithospheric mantle.
