Population monitoring of the coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae)
Article Abstract:
The survival of the coelacanth in the Indian Ocean is threatened by local fishing. Estimates of coelacanth population in 1991 as between 230 and 650 individuals, yet a 1995 estimate for the same area suggests fewer than 300 individuals. An artisanal fishery in the area is most likely the cause for the observed decline in coelacanth population. Conservation efforts should offer fishing alternatives to local fishermen

Somatic stem cell niche tropism in Wolbachia
Article Abstract:
Wolbachia are intracellular bacteria found in the reproductive tissue of all major groups of arthropods and are transmitted vertically from the female hosts to their offspring, in a pattern analogous to mitochondria inheritance. A demonstration that newly introduced Wolbachia cross several tissues and infect the germline of the adult Drosophila melanogaster female is presented.
