Possibility of chemical weathering before the advent of vascular land plants
Article Abstract:
Carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the aerated earth zone (the vadose zone) above the water table are sufficient to account for constant chemical weathering since the mid-Proterozoic era. This is contrary to the common belief that soil CO2 replaced atmospheric CO2 as the chief cause of chemical weathering, and eliminates the requirement for high atmospheric CO2 levels. Low levels of microbial respiration suffice to maintain adequate CO2 levels.

Natural examples of olivine lattice preffered orientation patterns with a flow-normal a-axis maximum
Article Abstract:
A 'B-type' olivine preferred orientation with the a-axis maximum perpendicular to the flow direction is explained. A widespread B-type olivine preferred orientation patterns from a subduction-type metamorphic belt in southwest Japan indicate that these patterns develop in the presence of water.
