Power laws and universality
Article Abstract:
The Ising model is a mathematical model developed to provide scientists a ground to test their theories on 'critical' phenomena, or the interactions between constituent subunits in dynamical systems. It gave rise to the concept of 'scaling,' which refers to the property of systems to exhibit self-similar properties when they reach their critical points, and 'universality,' which suggests that even unlike systems behave in a similar fashion when they are near their critical points.

Viscous fingering of HCl through gastric mucin
Article Abstract:
Gastric mucus keeps the hydrochloric acid (HCl) secreted as a part of digestion from damaging the stomach's epithelium through viscous fingering. In vitro injection of HCl into mucin, a principal constituent of gastric mucus, produced these finger-shaped structures that result from the interaction of low-viscosity HCl with high-viscosity mucus. Acid-flow rate, pH and mucin levels also affect viscous fingering.

Dynamics of North American breeding bird populations
Article Abstract:
The variability of natural populations has long interested population biologists. One approach to solving ecological complexity has been to limit the system to a few species. An alternative approach is suggested that uses data from the North American breeding bird survey containing information on more than 600 species. The results give a quantitative basis for modelling large populations.
