Predicting the CJD epidemic in humans
Article Abstract:
Fourteen cases in the UK and one French case of the new-variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) have been confirmed up to the end of 1996. To study the possibility of a large epidemic of vCJD and how similar cases in the next few years may be useful in predicting the epidemic, mathematical models were used. These make assumptions regarding the distribution of exposure of the human population to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy agent over time and about the time from infection to clinical onset. Results suggest that enormous uncertainty surrounds the prediction of the course of the vCJD epidemic in humans if the sample size is small.

Sex surveys and drug users
Article Abstract:
A survey was conducted of the sexual activities of intravenous depressant drug users in Glasgow, Scotland, and it was compared with national surveys of British and French sexual attitudes to determine relative sexual activity. Male drug users reported a higher mean number of sexual partners for each age group than British men generally while female drug users reported a mean similar to that of British women generally. Drug users were found to have intercourse as frequently as the French sample.

BSE transmission data pose dilemma for UK scientists
Article Abstract:
Research data published by the UK Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee (SEAC) on transmission of bovine spongiform encephalopathy confirms spread of infection to the offsprings. Analysis of the results has been complicated by the consumption of infected feedstuff by some of the calves. However, the timing of the announcement has created a controversy. SEAC asserts that it acted in the best interests of public health while confirming the accuracy of the results.
