Prioritizing global conservation efforts
Article Abstract:
A way to allocate optimally conservation resources between regions identified as priorities for conservation, the 'conservation resource allocation problem' is formulated. Stochastic dynamic programming is used to find the optimal schedule of resource allocation of some problems but it is intractable for large problems owing to the 'curse of dimensionality'.

Human population in the biodiversity hotspots
Article Abstract:
Some 25 biodiversity hotspots have been identified that are particularly threatened by human activities. A new study analyses the human population dynamics of each hotspot and for other, less-threatened, tropical forest areas. It is calculated that over 1.1 billion people lived within these hotspots in 1995.

Turning up the heat on hotspots
Article Abstract:
A number of measures are being used to define the concentrations of biodiversity or what is otherwise called as hotspots. More rigorous, global scale analysis is being used to compare what would be essential for resource allocation to conserve these hotspots.
