Progress at the K-T boundary
Article Abstract:
There has been little agreement among scientists about the palaeobiological aspects of the debate about Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) mass extinction. However, 22 palaeontologists have now joined together to produce a summary of their opinions on the fossil record of the K-T biotic transition. It is now widely accepted that a short-term global extinction took place near the K-T boundary, with a particularly devastating impact on certain marine microfossil groups. Furthermore, it took a long time after the K-T event for biotic diversity to return.

Neurofibromin progress on the fly
Article Abstract:
The genetic disease neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) affects one in every 3,500 individuals. Guo and colleagues have shown neurofibromin deficiency in Drosophila occurs from a need for neurofibromin in activating adenylyl cyclase in the mature brain. Transgenic flies were created with a neurofibromin gene related to a heat-inducible promoter, enabling the gene to be turned on in adult mutants. The mutants could then learn normally.

Net progress
Article Abstract:
Wolf and colleagues have described a telemicroscopy system that enables Web-browser software to connect multiple clients via the Internet to a server computer controlling an automated light microscope. They show the equal and broader benefits of light microscopy linked to the Internet. The use of telemicroscopy could span research, medicine and manufacturing, although the expense of automated hardware is a consideration.
