Prolactin and helping behaviour in the cooperatively breeding Florida scrub-jay, Aphelocoma c. coerulescens
Article Abstract:
Prolactin levels in Florida scrub-jays are strongly correlated with their alloparental care. The pre-hatching increase in prolactin indicates that high prolactin levels stimulate alloparental care. However, the correlation of prolactin levels with the number of nestlings implies that alloparental care triggers prolactin increase. These correlations were determined by the number of nest visits and the amount of food delivered to nestlings.

Life and death in the fast lane: Demographic consequences of road mortality in the Florida Scrub-Jay
Article Abstract:
The demographic consequences of road mortality in the cooperatively breeding Florida Scrub-Jay, a threatened species restricted to the oak scrub of peninsular Florida, are examined. The study shows that the demographic consequences of road mortality, and its effect on the dynamics of populations and metapopulations deserve increased attention from conservation biologists.

Motivational control of caching behaviour in the scrub jay, Aphelocoma coerulescens
Article Abstract:
The motivational control of caching behaviour in scrub jays has been investigated using a procedure to study the effects of prefeeding and precaching on subsequent caching behaviour. It was found that prefeeding and precaching lessened subsequent caching of certain items, demonstrating that the effect of prefeeding on subsequent caching can be food specific.
