Prolactin and luteinizing hormone secretion in the pregnant pig
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to measure luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin (PRL) secretion throughout gestation in the pig. Serum LH and PRL concentrations were then measured during a 12-hour period every 20 days of gestation. Results of the study show that there is no significant variation in the LH concentration throughout pregnancy nor was there an appreciable increase in prolactin secretion during the first 90 days of pregnancy. On the 110th day of pregnancy, a surge in prolactin concentration occurs. However, these changes in concentration are not reflective of the transition from LH to PRL.

Effects of administration of growth hormone-releasing factor to sows during late gestation on growth hormone secretion, reproductive traits, and performance of progeny from birth to 100 kilograms live weight
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of growth hormone releasing factor (GHRF) in stimulating the secretion of growth hormone (GH) in sows during late gestation and the effects on reproductive traits and performance of progeny up to 100 kg live weight was investigated. The results showed that twice-daily injections of GHRF in the last two weeks of gestation caused improved pig survival during lactation and improved pig weight at weaning. Growth rate and performance of progeny after weaning was not affected, except for a slight enhancement of feed efficiency.

Effects of dietary energy on control of luteinizing hormone secretion in cattle and sheep

Nutritional status affects the hypothalamus-regulated reproductive activity of cattle and sheep wherein a deficiency affects neuroendocrine signals within the hypothalamus, reducing the secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone which is inhibitory to the pulsatile secrection of gonadotropin hormone, influencing the delay onset of puberty, disruption the mentrual cycle of sexuallymature animals, and length of post partum anestrous period.
