Proximate and ultimate causes of adoption in ring-billed gulls
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the causes of adoption in ring-billed gulls, Larus delawarensis. Results provided evidence for a breeding cost of adoption and suggested that adoption is a chick strategy. However, results failed to identify benefits to foster parents. The kin selection hypothesis was not supported since no evidence of genetic relatedness among neighboring pairs was found. The reciprocal altruism hypothesis was also not supported since the average breeding cost to foster parents exceeded the benefit.

Deciding where to settle: conspecific attraction and web site selection in the orb-web spider Nephilengys cruentata
Article Abstract:
A new study of the orb-web spider tests the theory that web-building spiders are more likely to choose habitats where conspecifics are present because it is an indirect signal that habitat is of good quality.
