Radiocarbon evidence for extensive plate-boundary rupture about 300 years ago at the Cascadia subduction zone
Article Abstract:
Analysis of earthquakes in the Cascadia subduction zone, located along the Pacific coast of North America, was undertaken through two radiocarbon dating procedures and the use of several plant fossils. The magnitude of earthquakes was calculated through the study of the length of the fault rupture that occurred in prehistoric times. Results show that the region experienced its last rupture or series of ruptures, which extended around 55 km.,in the 16th century.

A shopping trolley seismograph
Article Abstract:
The origin and nature of the Kobe, Japan earthquake can be studied by viewing the video tapes from convenience store's security cameras at the time the quake struck. Observation of the movement of store shopping carts during the quake also helps consider the nature of the shockwaves produced. These video recordings are also useful in providing insight into human behavior and methods of protection that should be employed in such crisis conditions are discussed.

Multiple seismic discontinuities near the base of the transition zone in the Earth's mantle
Article Abstract:
There is seismic evidence to support the existence of multiple transitions near a depth of 660 km beneath southern California. This evidence is consistent with generation by garnet transformations linking with the dissociation of the gamma-spinel phase of olivine.
