Rates and causes of grizzly bear mortality in the interior mountains of British Colombia, Alberta, Montana, Washington and Idaho
Article Abstract:
Grizzly bear populations reproduce at a slow rate and take a long time to mature, so female survival is important for the population as a whole. A study of 388 grizzly bears in 13 locations from 1975 to 1997 found that between 77% and 85% of the total of 99 bears killed or thought to have been killed were killed by humans. Males were more likely to be killed by hunting and females were more likely to die from natural causes. Females appeared to survive best where there was a preponderance of multiple-use land, with lower levels in areas that parks dominated.
