Real-time physiological responses of red deer to translocations
Article Abstract:
Red deer stags were monitored using remote heart rate and blood sampling devices to assess the impact of different stages of translocation. Lactate and haematocrit levels, and heart rates rose in the inital phase when the deer were herded and penned, and during loading, and cortisol levels rose for the translocation process as a whole. Magnesium and glucose levels were stable. Latent infections could be activated by high adrenal activity, so these findings are significant. Repeated translocations do not appear to lead to habituation. Translocation should be short, with transitional events limited as much as possible.

Further evaluation of the genetic consequences of translocations on southeastern white-tailed deer populations
Article Abstract:
The impact of translocation on the genetic composition of white-tailed deer populations in the southeastern region was investigated. Data from a previous study conducted by Leberg et al (1994) were reanalyzed to test the hypothesis that relations of genetic differences among deer populations and their translocation histories were caused by the success of the short-distance translocations. Results showed that translocations had significant and persistent effects on the genetic structure of deer populations.
