Referendum stalls Japanese nuclear power strategy

A referendum in Kariwa, Japan, has rejected the use of mixed oxide fuel at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power facility. The referendum is not legally binding, but the government acknowledges the need for support from local people before going ahead with plans to use this fuel.

Issues are presented concerning the chicken flu epidemic which has occurred in Hong Kong. The action which is being taken to eradicate the H5 virus, the slaughter of 1.3-million chickens and source of the outbreak are discussed.
