Reinventing yourself
Article Abstract:
PhD graduates may find that employment in patenting offers an attracting salary and scientifically challenging work. Two-years training are needed while the trainee is working and this includes training in law and computer skills. The biggest European patent offices are to be found in Germany and the United Kingdom. Patent examiners can become patent agents and they have to pass examinations. Patent agents can take examinations to become European Patent Attorneys who are able to draft patent applications and consult companies and investors in affairs related to patents.

The write stuff
Article Abstract:
Science journalism is often attractive to students and scientists, and science writing is more accesible than broadcasting. It is not easy to write about science in a simple and clear way. The initial opportunity appears to be the most difficult step in this career, where there is no specific structure. Courses are available in journalism and science communication. Training is not essential and scientists can start writing in their spare time. They can also approach specialist journals to learn skills.

Investigating the alternatives
Article Abstract:
A small proportion of PhD graduates can hope for long-term research careers, and only a third of US PhD graduates are likely to enter the system of academic tenure. Unemployment among PhD graduates is low, however, so there has been sufficient hiring elsewhere. Industrial research and development is the most common destination for such graduates, though they can also use their skills in marketing, consultancies and other areas. There is a self-help group on the internet for PhD graduates.
