Probability of survival and breeding for juvenile female canvasbacks
Article Abstract:
Research describing survival and breeding probability of juvenile female canvasbacks (Aythya valiseneria) is presented. It is shown that late dry breeding seasons have a negative effect on the ducks.

Survival and movements of canvasback ducklings
Article Abstract:
Some observers have expressed concerns about the prospects for canvasback ducks because of significant changes to the prairie parkland areas where they have traditionally bred. Recent research has focused on brood and duckling survival and overland brood movements. It was found that duckling survival was closely linked with duckling density, but not with June wetland water levels. Hatching date had no consistent links with duckling survival. Broods travelled an average total overland distance of 1.5 km.

Reproductive success and female survival affect local population density of canvasbacks
Article Abstract:
A new study of prairie-nesting canvas-backs suggests that local enhancements of breeding success results in local population growth. However, the methods of increasing reproductive success, which include barrier fences for protection and restoring egg displacement, are labor-intensive and would be impractical under normal circumstances. Other management techniques could result in similar effects and could increase the breeding success of other ground-nesting ducks.
