MOSA seeks promised land
Article Abstract:
Israel's ministry of science and art (MOSA) has proposed a new scheme for funding generic research in computing, micro-electronics, electro-optics, biotechnology and material sciences. MOSA will provide fewer grants but will increase the grant money for projects which cannot be funded by the ministry of industry and trade (MIT). MIT funds only those projects which are funded by private companies also, and so research is oriented toward industries with already accepted technology. MOSA hopes to support basic and innovative research that does not already have an industry following.

Dutch universities and research laboratories set for major cuts
Article Abstract:
Dutch scientific research organizations and universities are to suffer a cut in their funding. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science is to see a rise in its overall budget, but the additional funds will be used mainly to cut class sizes in primary schools. Universities will see funding fall by around 3% a year, with research funding accounting for more than half the cut. This development will put more pressure on Dutch contributions to international 'big science' programmes.
