Ruminant placental lactogens: structure and biology
Article Abstract:
Placental lactogens (PL) in ruminants, such as cows, sheep and goats, are structurally more similar to prolactin than to somatotrophins. PL is secreted in maternal as well as placental circulations and fetal concentration of PL decreases with advancing pregnancy. Though mass and nutrition of the placenta are related to Pl production, the exact mechanism for regulation of Pl secretion is not known. PL is believed to influence fetal growth and regulate maternal metabolism. It has both somatogeneic and lactogenic function.

Effects of melatonin treatment on the attainment of puberty in heifers
Article Abstract:
Results of an experimental study indicated that melatonin implant hastened puberty in early winter born calves. The study was conducted to determine the influence of exogenous administration of melatonin on puberty attainment, by three-month to four-month old heifer calves. The calves in the experimental group were implanted with melatonin for five weeks in early summer and puberty attainment in following spring was compared with that of the animals in the control group.
