Rhino relations
Article Abstract:
The endangered northern white rhino population is on a recovery path in the Garamba National Park in Zaire due to sustained efforts by conservationists. Civil disturbance and poverty made the animal almost extinct in neighbouring Sudan and Uganda. From a population of above 1000 in 1909 in the Savannas, poaching for horn has lowered the number near single digits. Conservation of the species is one of the highest priorities for the IUCN African Rhino Specialist Group. UNESCO recognizes Garamba as a World Heritage Site.
