Risk of predation and foraging sites of individuals in mixed-species tit flocks
Article Abstract:
A study of the foraging sites of individual willow and crested tits on spruce reveals that the position of each bird in mixed-species tit flocks is influenced by the risk of predatory attacks by the pigmy owl. When the risk of predation is high, adult willow tits and female crested tits forage on the inner parts of the trees, where they are protected. Male crested tits forage on upper parts of trees and provide protection to the females. The association of young willow tits who forage on the lower parts of spruce and dominant adults who forage in the higher parts is essential for their survival.
