The use of conspecific and interspecific scent marks by foraging bumblebees and honeybees
Article Abstract:
Research describing the odour cues used by foraging honeybees and bumblebees is presented. It is shown that the bees avoid flowers recently visited by either species for up to twenty four hours.

Foraging bumblebees avoid flowers already visited by cospecifics or by other bumblebee species
Article Abstract:
A community of bumblebees of the Bombus species foraging on comfrey in southern England were investigated to determine their ability to detect previously visited flowers. Results revealed that low incidence of multiple probing visits was due to systematic foraging and selective rejection of inflorescences. The bumblebees were unable to detect and reject inflorescences from which nectar had been removed artificially. These suggested that bumblebees are probably utilizing scent marks left by previous visitors.

Risk-sensitive foraging: choice behaviour of honeybees in response to variability in volume of reward
Article Abstract:
Sensitivity of an animal to resource variability can reveal possible constraints caused by neurological mechanisms as well as reflecting cognitive adaptations to environmental heterogeneity. A new study investigates the risk-sensitive foraging behaviour of honeybees in response to different volumes of reward. It is shown that honeybees are risk sensitive to variable volumes of reward, dependent on attributes of the reward contributions. Details of the study are presented.
