Role for lichen melanins in uranium remediation
Article Abstract:
Lichens successfully colonize in extreme terrestrial habitats through the world, and they have the ability to accumulate metals. The lichen Trapelia involuta was found to be growing directly on uranium minerals, and such specimens have atypically dark brown-black apothecia. It is though that melanization T. involuta is a protective response for the ascopores formed within the apothecia, from the toxicity of the uranium.
