Satellite tracking of white-faced whistling ducks in a semiarid region of South Africa
Article Abstract:
Little is known about the movement patterns of the white-faced whistling ducks that live in southern Africa. A new study is designed to identify the ducks' potential habitat requirements so that the species can be conserved and investigated. The movements of two white-faced whistling ducks fitted with satellite platform transmitter terminals are examined to assess where they overwinter and to determine whether they are migratory or nomadic. The study shows that artificial water bodies are important winter aquatic habitats for the ducks, allowing them to stay close to breeding areas and their annual movements to become less nomadic.

Performance and accuracy evaluation of small satellite transmitters
Article Abstract:
Satellite transmitters have been evaluated using American peregrine falcons in Alaska, Utah, and Arizona. The accuracy of smaller transmitters has yet to be fully evaluated, so the study aimed to do this by documenting nonbreeding areas and migration routes. The small transmitters are more accurate than some methods of monitoring, and are useful for assessing broad patterns of migration and the like. They are less useful when accurate information is needed on position, of less than 35 km.
