Engendering the courts in Papua New Guinea

Article Abstract:

Courts in Papua New Guinea treat women and men differently in some cases. Courts are both of the village court type, which are to apply law based on customs, and the Western-style court, which includes a probation service. Women appear before both types, but may be at a disadvantage in village courts where. in one out of four cultures considered, they often are expected to act with deference toward males and those they have brought before the court. They are not experienced in making public appearances. They are helped by the probation service in the other system.

Weinacht and colleagues have described an experiment whereby an atomic electron's wavefunction was shaped and driven into a chosen state with the use of tailored laser pulses. This could have significant applications in quantum computing and bond-selective chemistry. A variant of quantum state holography was used to measure the quantum state of the electron, which relies on interference between the object and the reference wave.
