Seasonal variation in venison quality of mature, farmed red deer stags in New Zealand
Article Abstract:
The effects of rut on venison quality were investigated in farmed red deer stags. Carcass parameters were found to be greater in prerut than in postrut stags. Total fat considerably decreased postrut. Longissimus muscle (LM) steaks postrut had a brighter and fresher appearance with greater acceptability, but no difference was found for semimembranosus muscle (SM) steaks. Prerut steaks were found to be more tender, had greater flavor intensity and higher overall desirability. Collagen content was increased in LM prerut, while that of SM did not vary significantly.

Rapid communication: mapping of the bovine growth hormone-releasing hormone receptor (GHRH-R) gene to chromosome 4 by linkage analysis using a novel PCR-RFLP
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the mapping of the bovine growth hormone-releasing hormone receptor gene to chromosome 4. Linkage analysis was utilized to carry out the study. In line with this, the amplification of polymerase chain reaction was performed using 20 ng of bovine genomic DNA. In addition, mendelian inheritance was observed in 175 animals. Results indicated that GHRH-R and GHRH-R are important candidate genes controlling the growth performance and carcass characteristics of beef cattle.
