Seismic anisotropy as an indicator of mantle flow beneath the Himalayas and Tibet
Article Abstract:
A change in seismic anisotropy is noticed along the Indus-Tsangpo suture (ITS) reflecting a change in the deformative forms at depth. This explains a ductile mantle flow in the north of the ITS and the piling of Indian and Tibetan lithospheres in the Himalayas. The high altitudes of the Himalayan region is due to the mechanical thickening of the crust and mantle flow.

Early uplift in Tibet?
Article Abstract:
A new study suggests that the northeastern part of the Tibetan plateau may have risen long before the southwestern part of the plateau. Outcrops of potassium-rich volcanic rock have been found in the northeastern plateau, ranging in age between 37 and 33 million years old. It is not known whether the volcanism was located near major faults or broadly spread.

The rise and fall of Tibet
Article Abstract:
Researchers have presented an 40Ar/39Ar age of 14 Myr for hydrothermal muscovites from a fault system in the Tibetan plateau. This age suggests that the east-west extension along the southern part of the plateau should have begun at least 14 Myr ago and also implies that the plateau achieved its high mean elevation even before the Late Miocene epoch.
