Separation of chiral phases in monolayer crystals of racemic amphiphiles
Article Abstract:
The spontaneous separation of chiral phases in an ordered monolayer of rigid, chiral amphiphiles deposited in mica is reported. The study protocol involved atomic force microscopy of the ordered monolayer of chiral amphiphiles. The results revealed domains of mirror-image structures, which were interpreted as a signature of separation into pure enantiomer domains. The 2-dimensional spontaneous resolution was considered analogous with the spontaneous resolution of enantiomers in 3-dimensional crystallization used by Louis Pasteur to isolate sodium tartrate enantiomers in 1848.

Chiral discrimination using piezoelectric and optical gas sensors
Article Abstract:
A sensor which detects changes in mass can play a useful role in the recognition of different enantiomers and in qualitatively monitoring the enantiomeric composition of amino-acid derivates and lactates in gas. A similar function can be undertaken by a sensor which detects changes in the thickness of a surface layer by reflectometric interference spectroscopy. Both sensor systems have been shown to be effective in discriminating between the (R) and (S)-enantiomers of selected gaseous species.

Asymmetric autocatalysis and amplification of enantiomeric excess of a chiral molecule
Article Abstract:
Autocatalysis increases the enantiomeric excess of chiral molecules. A small amount of (S)-2-methyl-1-(5-pyrimidyl)-propan-1-ol ((S)-1) efficiently catalyzes the enantioselective addition of diisopropyl zinc to pyrimidine-5-carboxaldehyde to produce (S)-1 with high enantiomeric purity. The configuration of the resulting product depends upon the configuration of the asymmetric autocatalyst, (S)- or (R)-1. The enantiomeric excess of (S)-1 increases by a factor of 942 during autocatalysis.
