The Sherkin spell
Article Abstract:
Sherkin Island, off the south coast of Ireland, attracts many nature lovers and students. Hundreds of biology students competed for the 20 seasonal vacancies offered in 1996 for a biological field research study which began in 1975. Sherkin is a diverse habitat, offering opportunities for research in plankton, porpoises and whales, birds, fish, and various flora. Aquaculture, farming and tourism form the basis of Sherkin's economy.

Sex and synergism
Article Abstract:
It is unclear why a significant number of organisms reproduce sexually rather than a-sexually. Some scientists believe that sexual reproduction is the preferred mechanism of genetic exchange because it introduces variation via genetic mutation, thus increasing the organism's chances of survival in the process of natural selection. Much more must be learned about sexual systems before any such conclusions can be drawn.

Article Abstract:
The etymology and history of use of 'mainstream,' 'extremism' and other terms used in political campaigns are analyzed. 'Mainstream,' brought into common use by John F Kennedy and Nelson Rockefeller, was probably coined by John Milton in a 1667 poem.
