Short-range control of cell differentiation in the Arabidopsis root meristem
Article Abstract:
Genetic research using laser ablation demonstrates that the quiescent centre of the plant Arabidopsis thaliana inhibits cell differentiation in the contacting columella initials of the root meristem. Cortical initial divisions in wild-type control and QC-ablated plants are compared. Evidence suggests that differentiation inhibition may depend upon cell contact. Reduced cell division rates are seen in the shoot meristem.

Cell fate in the Arabidopsis root meristem determined by directional signalling
Article Abstract:
Laser ablation analysis of root meristem of Arabidopsis thaliana reveals that position signalling mediates the cell fate. Information regulating allocation of cell fate in the radial plane is distributed through a single cell layer and is directed toward the tip. The alterations in cell fate are independent of marker-gene expression.
