Smectic ordering in solutions and films of a rod-like polymer owing to monodispersity of chain length
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that monodisperse polymer materials may tap into new smectic phases with layer spacing which are readily controllable. A monodisperse derivative of poly(delta-benzyl alpha,L-glutamate) exhibits smectic ordering in solution and in films. Evidence suggests that monodisperse poly(alpha,L-glutamic acid) precursor produced by bacteria results in smectic ordering on length scales of tens of nanometers.
