Article Abstract:

The Israel Space Agency (ISA), founded in 1983, aims at developing infrastructure for space research in academic institutes and defense and electronics industries. According to Aby Har-Even, director-general of ISA, the agency is associated with the defense industry but is more involved with civilian goals and its future depends on international collaboration. In 1988, ISA launched its first satellite and it plans to launch two geostationary telecommunication satellites in 1995. The ultimate goal of ISA is to become a member of the European Space Agency.

EU research chief to raise political profile

Article Abstract:

The new European Union's (EU) commissioner for research and education, Edith Cresson, stated that the EU foreign policy should be targeted to promote international scientific cooperation. Cresson also supported the reform of institutional procedures to prevent member states from securing their individual interests during the allocation of the EU research budget. She recommended restricting the power of research program committees in resource allocation to merely serving as planning advisors.

FDA warns on primate xenotransplants

Article Abstract:

Xenotransplants could bring a significant risk of infectious disease, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA's new guideline to industry does not explicitly ban xenotransplants from non-human primates, but indicates to clinical trial sponsors that it would be pointless to apply for FDA approval of protocols involving such xenotransplants, as it would not be possible to convince the FDA that this is safe.
