Spatio-temporal frequency domains and their relation to cytochrome oxidase staining in cat visual cortex
Article Abstract:
The cat primary visual cortex was analyzed by optical imaging to determine the spatial and temporal frequency domains or preferences of the cluster. Optical imaging analysis of feline spatio-temporal frequency indicated the presence of distinct receptive field properties of two neuronal populations in the cat primary visual cortex cluster. Furthermore, tracing studies also indicated a connection between neurons with cytochrome oxidase blobs and other visual cortical areas.

Development of identical orientation maps for two eyes without common visual experience
Article Abstract:
A reverse-suturing experiment was made, involving kittens which were raised so that both of their eyes would not be able to see at the same time until the fifth postnatal week to determine whether visual experience causes a match of orientation. The layout of the two maps that were formed under these conditions showed both to be very similar. This is indicative of the fact that correlated visual input is not required in the alignment of orientation preference maps.

Synapse specificity of long-term potentiation breaks down at short distances
Article Abstract:
A new local superfusion technique was used to asses the synaptic specificity of long-term potentiation (LTP), the long-lasting increase in synaptic transmission, with a spatial resolution of 30 mu m. Results suggested that a lack of input specificity at less than 70 mu m. Synapses closer to the potentiation site are also potentiated, although distant synapses showed no potentiation.
