Sperm trading by volume in a hermaphroditic flatworm with mutual penis intromission
Article Abstract:
Insemination is reciprocal when sperm donation is costly. The amounts of sperm exchange reciprocally between partners of the planarian flatwork Dugesia gonocephala were compared. Mating individuals had more self sperm in the field, but were less allosperm depleted than nonmating individuals. Similar amounts of sperm were exchanged by mating partners, with individuals giving more sperm when they have more, and receive more.

Sperm trading in a hermaphroditic flatworm: Reluctant fathers and sexy mothers
Article Abstract:
Sperm trading in the flatworm Schmidtea (Dugesia) polychroa was investigated. The amount of sperm donated depended on the availability of self-sperm indicating that sperm digestion boosts sperm production. Nonisolated (N) and an isolated individual (I) N x I, were compared with I x I and N x N paris. N individuals showed reduced reluctance to mate with and to inseminate previously isolated partners.

Assessment of the mating history of female pygmy octopuses and a possible sperm competition mechanism
Article Abstract:
Research on the sexual behavior of pygmy octopuses reveals that the male of the species has the capacity to determine the mating history of the females and alter its behavior in accordance. Males cope with females' indulging in mating with multiple males by ensuring that their sperm fertilizes most of the female's eggs.
