Northern lobby attacks UK synchrotron siting
Article Abstract:
A $313 million synchrotron, a collaborative project between the French and UK governments and the Wellcome Trust, is to be located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford, England. The decision to use Rutherford has prompted protests from those who were promoting Daresbury Laboratory near Manchester, England. Supporters of Rutherford believe that there are benefits associated with locating the synchrotron close to other facilities there, including the ISIS neutron source. However, supporters of Daresbury allege that there was a lack of transparency in the decision-making process.

Staff accuse bosses of secrecy over British synchrotron plans...
Article Abstract:
The UK government is coming under strong pressure from local MPs, trade unions and the regional development agency to locate the planned next-generation synchrotron source, Diamond, as the Daresbury Laboratory near Manchester, England. It is argued that there are strong economic and scientific reasons for choosing this site, where staff operate the current UK Synchrotron Radiation Source. However, it is possible that Diamond will be located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford, England, which has the advantage of being closer to the centre of biomedical activity.
