"Islands" of habitat in an agricultural "sea."

Article Abstract:

Douglas County, WA, plays a significant role in providing habitat for a number of threatened and endangered species, including sage grouse, bull trout, sharp-tailed grouse and steelhead trout. Douglas County is also a significant nesting and resting place for travelling birds, particularly because of the low human population density. There are four main classes of wildlife habitat in the county, including wooded stream courses and draws and shrub steppe. Local farmers have shown strong interest in the perpetuation of native wildlife species.

Roseate tern recovery: progress and challenges

Article Abstract:

There are currently around 3,382 pairs of roseate terns (Sterna dougallii) breeding in the northeastern US, from around 2,500 pairs in 1977. These birds have come under threat for many years, mainly as a result of displacement by herring and great black-backed gulls. The US Fish and Wildlife Service and State wildlife management agencies use a range of techniques to protect roseate terns from competition from gulls, including destroying gull nests and eggs and shooting gulls before terns arrive at nesting sites.
