Super slippery solids
Article Abstract:
Hollow nanoparticles of tungsten disulphide (WS2) have been synthesized and could be used as the next generation of solid lubricants. Transition-metal dichalcogenides and graphite are the most widely used solid lubricants, but these have inherent problems. The presence of dangling bonds in metal dichalcogenides obstructs lubrication, while there are no dangling bonds in nanoparticles of WS2. Hollow nanopowder apparently has a rolling lubrication mechanism rather than a sliding mechanism.

Super photon counters
Article Abstract:
It has been possible to use superconducting detectors to measure various aspects of photons. Two groups have now been able to measure everything except the polarization emitted by the Crab nebula pulsar. Now that it has been established that superconducting detectors work, it may be possible to extend the ability to measure single photons to much longer wavelengths. A new level of engineering will be needed to construct the circuitry to operate large arrays of superconducting detectors.

Making every photon count
Article Abstract:
It is possible to overcome the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, which is widely seen as a significant loss process, by doping the silver halide with formate ions. This produces a rise in the number of silver atoms generated per photon absorbed. The use of formate as a dopant seems to be efficient at destroying holes, and the resulting unstable CO-2 radical is capable of providing an additional electron for latent-image formation.
