Survival of Italian biomedical research
Article Abstract:
Italian biomedical research has been in the doldrums with a poor image and inadequate government funding but recent measures augur well for the medical industry. The decision to improve government grants has resulted in the development of good research facilities. New colleges for medical education have been opened under government and private sectors with improved standards. The European Union's biotechnology and biomedical programs are bound to have positive repercussions but the Italian government's commitment and a qualified faculty are prerequisites for the success of the new programs.

Avoiding traditions that undermine Italy's potential: For years Italy's research council has suffered from scientific direction tainted by political considerations. Changes now in train carry risks that the next generation of Italian scientists will be similarly betrayed
Article Abstract:
The Consiglio nazionale delle richerche (CNR), Italy's national research council is undergoing restructuring, with the removal of its role as a grant agency and the dissolution of its 14 discredited discipline-based advisory committees. The aim of the changes is to improve research quality and bring standards to the level of Germany's Max Planck Society (MPS), with fewer, but larger laboratories of greater scientific stature.

Oscillation, activation, expression
Article Abstract:
Oscillations in cytosolic Ca(super2+) concentrations have attracted considerable interest, but the physiological significance of the phenomenon is still in question. Dolmetsch at colleagues and Li and colleagues have reported experiments where oscillations have been generated by new processes that bypass the complex cell heterogeneity. Results show that oscillations can be specific for gene activation.
