Survival of northern bobwhite chicks in western Oklahoma
Article Abstract:
Researchers investigated survival rates of northern bobwhite chicks. The researchers used the Mayfield method, but this was modified to account for brood mixing, an activity known to occur amongst northern bobwhites but not considered in previous studies. The researchers used radiotelemetry to study 59 broods in Oklahoma over a period from 1992 to 1994. The researchers estimated survival rates for chicks from hatching to 20 days old to be 37.9%, and for chicks from 21 to 39 days old to be 96.8%. The estimated survival rate from hatching to 39 days is 36.7%

Assessing the suitability of landscapes for northern bobwhite
Article Abstract:
The decline of northern bobwhite may be linked to changes in habitat at both a micro and macro level. A new study uses satellite imagery to identify and assess landscape suitability for bobwhite over the entire Illinois state. Results are compared with indexes of northern bobwhite numbers using data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey and the Illinois Landcover Database. A pattern recognition model is developed that identifies Illinois landscapes suitable for bobwhite.
