Temporal and geographical variation in songs of humpback whales, Megaptera novaeangliae: synchronous change in Hawaiian and Mexican breeding assemblages
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the similarities which occur in the vocalizations of humpback whale breeding assemblages in spite of the large distances occurring between groups and the progressive changes to the songs.

Evidence for acquisition of a novel feeding behavior: lobtail feeding in humpback whales, Megaptera novaeangliae
Article Abstract:
The spread of lobtail feeding in humpback whales (Megapteranovaeangliae) is investigated. Results show that lobtail feeding increased in frequency steadily during the ten years between 1980-1989 among humpback whalesin the southern Gulf of Maine. Moreover, lobtail feeding is commonly displayed by both sexes of age two years or older. This behavior is seen as a consequenceof humpback whales switching from feeding on herring to sand lance, and has spread through cultural transmission.

Paternity in humpback whales, Megaptera novaeangliae: Assessing polygyny and skew in male reproductive success
Article Abstract:
The predictions regarding male reproductive success in humpback whales were tested using molecular assessment of paternity in a population in the Mexican Pacific. It was concluded that a polygynous mating system was found in that population, but not with a large variation in male reproductive success and in the operational sex ratio and degree of male competition for males.
