Norway rats as predators of burrow-nesting seabirds: insights from stable isotope analyses
Article Abstract:
The use of stable isotope measurements can play a valuable role in assessing the impact of introduced predators on ground-nesting seabirds. A study focusing on three regions of Langara Island in British Columbia, Canada, indicates that Norway rats exploit the best and most easily available food items, according to region and habitat. Plant shoots tended to be consumed more frequently away from the ocean, where other foods were less readily available. The stable isotope approach makes it possible to delineate longer-term integrations of predator diets.

Behavioral responses of two predator species to sudden declines in primary prey
Article Abstract:
A new study in New Zealand seeks to determine what effect the decline of primary prey has on the behavioral responses of feral cats and ferrets, which are implicated in bovine tuberculosis. The study also gives an account of ferret movements using radiotelemetry. The poisoning of rabbits, the species' prime prey, is shown to have little change in the behavior of adult predators although large-scale reductions are shown to result in their limited dispersal to adjacent areas.
