The 'Daly gap' as a magmatic catastrophe
Article Abstract:
The Daly gap offers an explanation of magmatic gaps giving an interpretation transposed from chemical reactor control theory. A magma reservoir which is erupting, crystallizing and replenishing consists of aphyric lavas at first output and competing thermochemical steady states later. The Daly gap associates with long magma residence times and strong conductive hydrothermal cooling. Small variations in magma residence times and cooling rate induce large thermal and chemical change ultimately leading to bimodal erupted products.

The Lu-Hf dating of garnets and the ages of the Alpine high-pressure metamorphism
Article Abstract:
It is possible to use plasma-source mass spectrometry to obtain lutetium-hafnium (Lu-Hf) mineral ages on eclogites from the Alps. This gives confirmation that garnet has a particularly high Lu/Hf ratio, which in turn assists in establishing accurate dates for high-pressure metamorphic events. It appears that the process of burial and exhumation of crustal rocks takes place over a short period of time in relation to the overall time during which high-pressure conditions exist.

Evidence from Sardinian basalt geochemistry for recycling of plume heads into the Earth's mantle
Article Abstract:
The origin of the EM-1 deposits in certain basalt rocks is a long unsolved puzzle, but new research comparing geochemical data from Pitcairn Island and Sardinia may help solve the puzzle of the EM-1 signature.
