The E. coli ffh gene is necessary for viability and efficient protein export
Article Abstract:
The ffh gene of Escherichia coli is a homologue of the gene that encodes the 54K subunit of the mammalian signal recognition particle. The protein it specifies, Ffh, shares the ability of its eukaryotic counterpart to bind signal sequences specifically. It also associates with mammalian 7S RNA, as well as E. coli 4.5S RNA. Experiments with a strain which shows arabinose-dependent ffh expression indicate that the Ffh protein plays an important role in protein translocation.

Crystal structure of bacterial signal peptidase in complex with a Beta-lactam inhibitor
Article Abstract:
The membrane-bound endopeptidase signal peptidase (SPase) from Escherichia coli has two amin-terminal transmembrane sectors and a carboxy-terminal catalytic region. SPase acts to release translocated proteins. The x-ray crystal structure of a catalytically active soluble fragment of E. coli SPase has been determined in a complex with a Beta-lactam inhibitor. This could be a template for the design of antibiotic compounds.

YidC mediates membrane protein insertion in bacteria
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the method by which proteins are translocated across or into membranes from Escherichia coli to humans. The importance of YidC in membrane insertion is discussed.
