The acid test for band 3
Article Abstract:
The complete absence of erythrocyte band 3 protein in red blood cells of gene-disrupted mice and Japanese black cattle has significant implications for hereditary spherocytosis and mammalian acid-base physiology. Band 3 is expressed only in red cells and acid-secreting cells in the kidney, and has a profound influence on whole-body acid-base balance. The amino-terminal portion of band 3 binds the erythrocyte skeleton while the carboxy-terminal membrane domain increases the CO2 carrying capacity of blood. Band-3 deficient animals can serve as animal models for human distal renal acidosis.

Europe's winter prospects
Article Abstract:
Rodwell and colleagues have numerically integrated a climate model to describe the large-scale atmospheric balances of momentum, heat and moisture, with externally set variables. Actual sea-surface temperature (SST) values were used and strong evidence for a synchronicity between model-simulated and observed NAO fluctuations due to specifying realistic SST variability in the extratropical North Atlantic Ocean, was produced.
