France's presidential candidates have given their views on science, technology and also over the French research community's standing and prospects. Nicolas Sarkozy, Segolene Royal and Francois Bayrou, the three leading candidates, spoke about the prospects of ANR, a national research-funding agency, Ariane and EPR, European pressurized reactor designed by Areva.

Research and innovation have emerged as the major campaign issues in the France's 2007 presidential election and scientists are willing to support the reforms needed to enhance scientific performance. The restructuring of fragmented life-science research and creating a dual system of government laboratories and competitive grants are some of the top priorities.

Science high on French political agenda

Science has become the major priority on the French political agenda. France's new government's environmental commitments on paper is regarded as 'historic' and its ecological bent might make for an interesting G8 meeting, which is scheduled for 6-8 June, 2007 in Germany.
