The carbon equation
Article Abstract:
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) 1995 report sets out a number of anthropogenic CO2 emission scenarios aimed at stabilizing atmospheric CO2 concentrations within the range 350-1,000 parts per million. New research, one based on the terrestrial carbon sink and the other focused on the ocean carbon sink, into the effects of environmental change on CO2 fluxes on land and in the oceans gives substantially different results for fluxes compared with the models used in the IPCC reports and suggests an urgent need for further research into the levels of atmospheric CO2.

The Arctic's shrinking sea ice
Article Abstract:
Polar warming, especially in the Arctic, is considered a symptom of greenhouse-gas-induced climate changes, according to many simulations based on the general circulation model. Two different observation techniques, using the Special Sensor Microwave Imager and Nimbus-7 Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer, show a decrease in Arctic sea ice between 1987 and 1994, though no change in Antarctic ice is detected. This trend needs to be carefully monitored to determine whether the decrease will continue and whether it is an indicator of greenhouse climate changes.
